PERSOL Group: “Work, and Smile” Global Survey Results Preliminary Announcement
-Through this annual survey, survey analysis and promotional activities, the PERSOL Group aims to improve the realization of the “Work, and Smile” concept-TOKYO, Japan – PERSOL Holdings CO., LTD., in collaboration with the Wellbeing for Planet Earth Foundation, conducted a survey between February 2020 and March 2021 in 116 countries and regions through the Gallup World Poll, the world’s largest public opinion poll, to measure if and to what level the PERSOL Group’s vision, “Work, and Smile,” can be realized by people around the world.
The level of “Work, and Smile” was measured through three questions. The results for Japan are as shown below:

・There is a correlation between how much one engages with work and how much enjoyment one feels when working;
・There is a correlation between having many options for work or ways of working and one’s own expectations for the future.■ Initiatives for the Future
This survey will be used to promote the “Work, and Smile” concept through the following efforts:
(1) “Work, and Smile” ongoing global survey and detailed analysis:
・The PERSOL Group will continue to conduct annual surveys and compare results. We will also work with research institutions such as the PERSOL Research and Consulting Co., Ltd. to conduct factor analysis and other types of studies that will lead to improved “Work, and Smile” realization;
・The results of these surveys will be made widely available as open data to deepen research and analysis.(2) Spread this Initiative to our customers and other organization:
・The PERSOL Group will expand the circle of companies and organizations that share, study and analyze each other’s efforts;

“We believe that in the coming era of drastic changes in the environment surrounding work, it will become even more important for each individual to proactively envision their own work. The results of the “Work, and Smile” global survey reminded us of the importance of increasing the number of choices individuals have in envisioning the future. ■ Background of the Survey
In October 2019, the PERSOL Group formulated a new group vision, “Work, and Smile” with the aim of realizing a society in which each individual can decide how they want to work and lead a fulfilling life. To realize this vision, we will investigate the current state of affairs and research its value to society. Furthermore, we will promote the importance of “Work, and Smile” to society through the corporate activities of the PERSOL Group.
■ “Work, and Smile” Global Survey Overview
Objective: “Work, and Smile” development of measurement indicators, surveys, and research
Partner: Wellbeing for Planet Earth (WPE Foundation)
Target: Approx. 1,000 individuals per country x 116 countries and regions
Period: Feb 2020–Mar 2021
Method: International public opinion poll Gallup World Poll*. Three additional questions about “Work, and Smile” were added.(*) The world’s largest public opinion poll, conducted annually since 2005 by Gallup in the United States. The poll sees approximately 1,000 people per country aged 15 and older respond and is conducted in approximately 150 countries and regions representing 99% of the world’s population (in 2020, 116 countries and regions due in part to due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
Survey Questions
Survey takers answered the following questions with “Yes”, “No”, “Don’t know” or “Don’t want to answer”:(1) Do you enjoy the work you do in your job every day, or not?
(2) Do you think the work you do in your job significantly improves the lives of other people outside of your own household, or not?
(3) Do you, personally, have many choices in regard to the type of work you can do in your life?Intent of the Questions
In this survey, two elements that indicated “Work, and Smile” were included in the questions. “Feeling pleasure and enjoyment” in Question 1 referred to individuals’ overall experience, and “connected to improving people’s lives” in Question 2 referred to their evaluation of whether their work has a positive effect on society.In addition, the PERSOL Group believes that autonomous career choice is essential to the realization of “Work, and Smile.” This element is incorporated into the Question 3.
